Coco Chanel

“My life didn’t please me, so I created my life.”

Coco Chanel

Like noone else, Coco Chanel knew how to brand herself. She kept her past life as a child in an orphanage a secret, so she could climb the social ladder to the French upper class. Together with her lover Pierre Reverdy she invented catchy oneliners about her life. She influenced the way the world perceived her, while at the same time making her fashion a symbol of emancipation. She created a timeless icon, larger than life.

With Coco Chanel’s life as the red thread for the performance, theatermakers Ulrike Quade & Jo Strømgren (NO) created a performance about branding & design, economy & identity. They were inspired by a woman who claimed her right to create herself. COCO CHANEL is visual theater in which the human becomes fashion and fashion transcends the human.

COCO CHANEL was co-produced by Ulrike Quade Company, Jo Strømgren Kompani (NO) and Strijbos & Van Rijswijk. An earlier co-production of Ulrike Quade Company and Jo Strømgren Kompani was the succesful The Writer, which is still performed worldwide.

COCO CHANEL premiered on 3 april 2017 at Theater Bellevue Amsterdam.
